We elves are known for our attention to detail, which is why elves often make fine editors.  Every time you edit—striving to improve the written word—you are thinking like a story elf.  You are paying close attention to details.

One way elves think about editing is to understand that writing must be clear to all, even fully grown humans, who, as you know, are notorious at misunderstanding things.  Even if the words make sense to you, you must be certain that they will make sense to others.

The next time you are editing, be sure to ask yourself, “How could this sentence be improved so that even a grown-up would understand?”
